OK, we’ve tried all of the loud, noisy “private” rooms we could think of, so we’re trying a HOUSE. Come at 6pm, bring a beverage or a snack or both! Everyone welcome. Send us an email letting us know you’re coming, so we can get our seating arranged! Be there or be square! We are at 2515 Viking Way, right at the corner of Shasta View and Viking.

2009 Turkey Regatta
Greg Adams, ably assisted by crew Doug Sousa, smoked the fleet of eight boats to win the Turkey Race of 2009.
It was a bright sunny day, winds were generally light, and the two Snipers Michael Moore and Ron Hanford were near-perfect in their barge work. To get a better look at the photos below, visit our web album here.
Continuing the long tradition of the Turkey Race, this year’s winner provides the turkey for next year’s race — coming to a lake near you in early November, 2010. Congratulations Greg and Doug!

Photos of annual dinner?
We saw some flashes flashing, so we know there are some photos out there! We’d love to post them on the website (and use them in the newsletter), so please send what you have!
Charlie Alward Passes
Our friend and long-time member Charlie Alward passed away on December 6th. It’s been a few years since Charlie last sailed with us at Whiskeytown, but most members remember his boat Mariah, and seeing him at annual dinners. We last saw him at the French Gulch hotel, when he was his same charming and handsome self. The Record Searchlight published a lovely obituary about Charlie on January 10th. It’s worth a read . . . for instance, did you know that he acquired his pilot’s license at the age of 60? Those who would like to read more or sign his guest book, see the article here.

Whiskeytown Aerial View
Remember that stunning story of the pilot who crashed at Benton Airport in his small plane, yet he and his little dog Stanley survived? If you missed that, the story is here. Eric works for PACE Civil Inc. in Redding as a construction observer, and part of his job involves flying and photography. And in his free time, his fun involves flying and photography. You can see examples of his work all over the north state, including at the Shasta County Library and Graphic Emporium.
I bumped into him at Redding Rehabilitation Hospital where he was recovering from the crash, and we discovered we both taught part-time at Shasta College (and I was his union rep). It’s been great to see him recover from truly serious injuries and get back on his feet!
I asked him recently if he had any aerial shots of Whiskeytown, and this is the first one he sent me. He also reported, “I flew this afternoon and shot a couple of sequences of Whiskeytown which I will try stitching together soon,” which means he’s working on making a panoramic shot for us.
This is something I’d like to work into letterhead and a banner at the top of our page, so I’m delighted that he’s helping us with this! To find out more about Eric, visit that marvelous panoramic shot on display in the lobby of the library, and visit his website!

Annual Dinner, Awards, Appreciation
Those who had other plans missed a great dinner! The prime rib was EXCELLENT, and we were able to show videos of the regatta finishes, thanks to the loan of a projector from Crown Camera. Those of you who go in to this fine local business should ask for Frank Tona or Mackenzie Hughes, and thank them for trusting us with this valuable piece of equipment (the rental usually runs $200, and we were able to use it at no charge after offering a full color ad in four newsletters).

It took some serious calculating to compute who should receive the Sailor of the Year (SOTY) award. We took the combined results of all races, and crunched some numbers. Your webperson won’t attempt to explain this (look under “race results” in the menu bar above), but we are asking the number crunchers to provide details so we can post them here.
At any rate, Greg Adams took the SOTY, and Gorden Briggs received a wonderful dark blue Land’s End jacket embroidered with his and the club name as the Commodore’s Award this year. Gorden was nominated and unanimously approved by the board after his contributions of working on the new marks, creating trophies, and getting the barge pulled and surveyed for insurance purposes. Gorden selected the glasses as awards for the fall series, and had them engraved (we can also thank our web/graphic designer, Derek Highet for quickly getting together camera-ready artwork for the engraving).

We’re also creating a list of individuals who made contributions (both small and large) to the club this year so we can appreciate them on the website and in the newsletter.
If you would like to recommend anyone for appreciation, please do so in the comments link below!

Please find your ballot in newsletter and return!
We needed to let you know that there IS a deadline for the return of the ballots. Your intrepid treasurer and webmistress are working on calling everyone to make sure they know. The ballots may either be delivered by hand at the dinner on November 7th, or should be received in our post office box by that date. Ballots received after November 7th cannot be counted.
Just to repeat, if you are a member, you should have found your ballot IN your newsletter, which was mailed on Tuesday, October 27th. Please mark your choices (or add your write-in candidate and place in the small envelope we provided. PLEASE DO NOT MARK ON OR PUT YOUR NAME ON THE SMALL ENVELOPE. Place that inside the larger return envelope and mail it or hand deliver it to us. We will mark your name off on the membership list, and then place your secret ballot in the ballot box.
Goodbye to Jake and Kelly Weld
We’re sorry to report that we’re losing two valuable club members. Jake has accepted a post as principal at a private school in North Carolina and is likely already gone. Kelly will continue her teaching post in French Gulch until the end of January, and then will join her hubby. Their boat VooDoo is up for sale, but also may travel cross country to try the waters on the east coast. Some board members are already mulling how quickly we can get scores back east, and whether we can convince Jake to keep providing us his results! We’ll miss them both on the lake!
If you have comments or goodbyes, feel free to make them here. Just press the “comments” button below. Or, click the other link to move to the forums, where this kind of discussion is much easier!
